What is a Blast Beat?
A blast beat is a drum beat that originated in hardcore punk and grindcore, and is often associated with certain styles of extreme metal, namely black metal and death metal and occasionally in deathcore and metalcore. The term “blast beat” was coined by the British band Napalm Death in the 1980s, but the rhythm can be traced to jazz musicians in the 1960s. The first documented use of the rhythm in heavy metal was in a performance of “War Pigs” by Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward in 1970.
